Who We Are
Richard Fairfield has been in law enforcement for over forty three years. He began
his career in January 1972 as a reserve police officer for the City of
Gardiner, Maine. During 1972, he also worked as a reserve police officer for
the City of Hallowell, Maine. In 1973, he was hired as a fulltime Patrolman for
the City of Augusta, Maine. In 1975, he was employed by the U.S Department of
the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service. He became a Special Agent in 1977. In
1979, he was employed by the Department of the Attorney General as a Special
Investigator. In 1993, he became a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). He has been
a CFE for over twenty years.
In 2001, he retired from the State of Maine and was employed by the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Maine, as an Investigator. He retired from the USAO in October 2015.
Education and Training
In 1974, Rick graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. In 1975, he graduated from the University of Maine, Augusta, Maine with an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement. In 1977, he graduated from the University of Maine, Augusta, Maine with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. In 1977, he graduated from Special Agent and Criminal Investigators School at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia.
From 1983 to the present, Rick has attended training classes both state and federal in White Collar Crime Investigations as well as all types of Fraud and Financial Investigations. These courses were conducted at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the National Advocacy Center, U.S. Department of Justice, Columbia, South Carolina as well as at other state and federal agencies and locations.
Instructor and Trainer
From 1984 to the present, Rick has been an instructor and trainer at the previously listed state and federal schools and academies. He also instructed college Criminal Justice courses at the Southern Maine Community College, South Portland, Maine and Thomas College, Waterville, Maine. He has been a guest speaker and instructor at the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine and Kaplan University, Auburn, Maine. He has been a guest speaker for the Maine Associations of Certified Public Accountants and Certified Internal Auditors.
